Virat Kohli vs Joe Root: Dinesh Karthik Reveals His Best Choice

Virat Kohli vs Joe Root

In the present era, the battle for dominance has been a continuously debated point. Most often, the names mentioned in the conversation include Indian star batter Virat Kohli and English batter Joe Root. Both these cricketers have played a crucial role for their team and have set new milestones in cricket by breaking massive records. While Joe Root has exhibited consistent performance, Kohli’s aggression and his readiness to perform under pressure, particularly while chasing targets made him acquire a huge fan base globally.

The entire cricketing world is left debating on who holds the superior position in terms of statistics, which has played a core role in the conversation. Meanwhile, the former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik voices his opinion about the Virat Kohli vs Joe Root rivalry by declaring who stands best in the cricketing world.

Dinesh Karthik’s Opinion on his No.1 Choice: Kohli vs Root

In a recent conversation on Cricbuzz’s show HeyCB with DK, Dinesh Karthik reveals that his heart says Virat Kohli although the stats favor Joe Root. Here’s what DK said:

“See! If you observe the numbers, it will reveal Joe Root, but my heart is the fact that he (Virat Kohli) is one such cricketer I have observed playing in close games for a long period now, more than a decade. I know how he enjoys playing those big moments and crucial series. And if someone asks him the question, he will come so strongly that you will be puzzled that WOW! Why did I even pose such a question?  If I was asked a question of who would bat for me when I really need under tough situations, then it would certainly be Virat Kohli and there is no hesitation or uncertainty in that.” Dinesh Karthik spoke during the chat.

Why Dinesh Karthik Prefers Virat Kohli over Joe Root?

Dinesh Karthik prefers Kohli due to his long-term relationship with international cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). Moreover, Karthik believes that Kohli’s aggressiveness with the bat can yield several match-winning knocks that can overshadow Root’s solid and consistent performance.

But, India’s star batter has been away from test cricket for a long time. Kohli missed the England series earlier in 2024 due to his personal commitments. He scored his last test century against West Indies in 2023. In 113 test matches, Kohli scored 8,848 runs in 191 innings which includes 7 double hundreds, 29 centuries, and 30 half-centuries. He has yet to cross the 10,000-run mark in his test career.

In contrast, Root achieved the most number of test centuries since 2021. Revisiting the stats of the last three years, he scored 17 tons in the red-ball format, whereas Kohli who was leading the Fab 4 list before that period managed to score only two test centuries in this span.

Furthermore, Root scored 12,402 runs in 267 test innings. He achieved 5 double centuries, 34 hundreds, and 64 fifties in 146 test matches. This justifies Dinesh Karthik’s statement that numbers prove why Root is the first choice.

However, Virat Kohli is expected to bounce back to his best in the forthcoming home test series which includes 2-matches against Bangladesh and 3-matches against New Zealand. But, the 35-year-old Indian cricketer has the biggest challenge of his life in the Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, which consists of a 5-match test series. It would be a crucial red-ball series for Kohli on Australian soil to prove his dominance once again.

Conclusion:

Dinesh Karthik with his comments highlights the immense respect and admiration Virat Kohli received from his teammates for his unmatched performance and dedication toward the game and his talent to bring positive results for the team under pressure.

Joe Root has many years of experience in the longer formats, ranking among the leading run-scorers in Test cricket. But, Virat Kohli’s contribution across all three different formats in international cricket, particularly in extremely difficult situations remains unchallenged.

A majority of cricket fans have grown up watching the intense rivalry between Kohli and Root in terms of records. Both these right-handed batters have a unique batting style, which makes the sport much more intriguing.

Virat Kohli’s fierce and bold style of playing cricket is completely in contrast with Joe Root’s classy style and calm approach. Fans have been engaging themselves in the discussion about who is better as both of them have their set of loyal fan base.

Ultimately, Dinesh Karthik’s comments aren’t about crowing at the winner of the game. Rather, he means to convey that the true value of Virat Kohli and Joe Root will be based on their contributions to the team.

As these two players are still active in their international cricket careers, the ongoing rivalry is a long way from a conclusion and fans can expect never-before thrilling contests between the two modern-day legends in the upcoming days.
