Team India’s T20I Future: The Ideal Replacements For Rohit And Virat

Rohit

After the T20 World Cup 2024 success, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement from the T20 internationals (T20Is) left a huge void in Team India’s squad and the management is constantly seeking a perfect replacement for these two modern-day legendary cricketers.

However, Suryakumar Yadav proved himself as a talented skipper and successor to Rohit Sharma in the shortest format of international cricket.

Rohit and Kohli (popularly known as the “Ro-Ko” combination) concluded their T20I career in style as the leading run scorers of the format. The Hitman Rohit Sharma with 4,231 runs in 151 innings and the run-machine Virat Kohli with 4,188 runs in 117 innings, currently ranks in the top two positions. Whereas, Pakistan’s former white-ball captain Babar Azam finds himself in 3rd position in the list with 4,145 runs in 116 innings.

But, the main question arises who could carry forward the legacy of these two great batsmen in T20I history? Mainly, it is a challenge for the present generation of cricketers to take up the Ro-Ko’s role. Although, the wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant seems to be the promising candidate, young talents such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rajat Patidar, Riyan Parag, Shubman Gill, and Tilak Varma.

Let’s find out why the Indian cricket team selectors will be keen to prioritize the promising talents in the squad as an heir to Ro-Ko’s legacy over other potential batsmen such as Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer.

1. Yashasvi Jaiswal:

Since his debut in white ball cricket against West Indies in August 2023, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 723 runs in 22 T20I innings at an average of 36.15 and a strike rate of 164.32, including his best score of 48-ball-hundred against Nepal.

Although the 22-year-old left-handed batsman was part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad, he hasn’t played a single game in the tournament. But, his proven abilities as an aggressive opening batter grab the selectors’ attention as a suitable candidate who can accumulate quick runs for the team.

2. Suryakumar Yadav:

Team India’s current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has established himself as the World’s Best T20 batsman, scoring 2,461 runs in 69 innings at an average of 42.43 and a strike rate of 169.02. He achieved 4 centuries in his T20I career and needs another two more hundreds in this format to surpass Rohit Sharma’s exceptional record. As Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired from T20Is, the 34-year-old right-handed batsman has the maximum chance to become the leading run scorer in the T20I format.

3. Ruturaj Gaikwad:

Known as the Asian Games Men’s Cricket 2023 winning captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad has the flexibility to bat at the top four positions in the batting order. The 27-year-old Chennai Super Kings captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) scored 633 runs in 20 T20I innings with 4 fifties and a century.

However, the selectors need to give Ruturaj maximum chances so that his batting abilities prove beneficial for the team in the long run.

4. Rishabh Pant:

The 27-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has made a remarkable comeback after recovering from a life-threatening car accident. In the T20 World Cup 2024, Pant batting at the No.3 position, scored 171 runs in 8 matches at an average of 24.43 and was the third highest-scoring Indian batsman after the skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.

As of 9th October 2024, Rishabh Pant scored 1,209 runs in 66 innings of the T20I format. Batting at third, fourth, and fifth position in T20Is, Pant’s presence promises to deliver quickfire knocks and add fuel to the middle order.

5. Abhishek Sharma:

It has been two months since Abhishek Sharma made his debut in international cricket in July 2024. He scored 140 runs in 5 T20I innings at an average of 28.0 and strike rate of 179.49, with his best score of 47-ball-century against Zimbabwe.

The 27-year-old all-rounder’s sensational performance in IPL 2024, secured a spot in the young Indian T20I squad. His power-hitting abilities as an opening batsman remind us of Rohit Sharma, who promises to strengthen his position in the T20I batting lineup.

6. Riyan Parag:

The 22-year-old Riyan Parag was the third-highest run scorer in the IPL 2024 by accumulating 573 runs in 16 matches. In contrast to his IPL career, Riyan hasn’t been able to replicate the same success as he scored just 57 runs in 4 T20I innings, which includes his best score of only 26 runs. However, the young all-rounder has made handy contributions with his spin bowling abilities and has the potential to score huge runs for the team, only if he bats higher in the batting order.

7. Rajat Patidar:

In this year’s IPL, Rajat Patidar scored 395 runs in 15 matches at an average of 30.38 and a strike rate of 177.13, which includes his highest score of 55 runs. So far, he scored 799 runs in 3 seasons of 24 IPL innings by accomplishing a century and 7 half-centuries. The 31-year-old batsman is yet to make his T20I debut and can strengthen the middle-order batting line-up with his ability to play fierce knocks.

8. Tilak Varma:

The South Indian cricketer Tilak Varma scored 336 runs in 15 T20I innings at an average of 33.6 and a strike rate of 139.42. The 21-year-old left-handed batsman has played outstanding knocks for the Mumbai Indians franchise in the IPL batting in the middle order and accumulating 1,156 runs in 38 innings. But, it could be a tough challenge for Tilak, to not only secure a spot among the competitive youngsters but also prove his worth in the playing XI.

9. Shubman Gill:

India’s right-handed batsman Shubman Gill has proven his abilities in his previous appearances by scoring 578 runs in 21 matches at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.28. Also, his best knock of 126 not out against New Zealand, is the highest individual score by any Indian batsman in T20I cricket. Although Gill can bat at the opening and one-down positions, it could be challenging for him to secure a spot in the T20I squad among the other young batters who have been performing consistently to strengthen their top three positions. Also, the selectors would consider the workload management of the 25-year-old cricketer, who has an important role to play for his team in the ODIs and Tests.

10. Shreyas Iyer:

In 51 T20I matches, Shreyas Iyer scored 1,104 runs in 47 innings for India at a batting average of 30.67 and strike rate of 136.13, including his highest score of 74 runs. But, the 29-year-old right-handed batsman has been undergoing tough phases in his life due to his poor form in recent domestic tournaments such as the Irani Cup and Duleep Trophy. Perhaps, this could be the main reason why selectors prefer the current in-form players in the T20 format rather than the experienced ones with below-average form.

11. Ishan Kishan:

The left-handed batsman Ishan Kishan could be the alternative option as a wicketkeeper after Rishabh Pant.

Despite his talent to provide great starts as Team India’s opening batter, the selectors have sidelined him for showing a lack of dedication towards the sport. Earlier, Ishan cited his mental health issues and opted himself out of the international series that were crucial for India as well as the domestic cricket. As a result, Ajit Agarkar’s led selection committee decided to not only omit him from the national team’s squads of all formats but also exclude him from BCCI’s central contract list.

If the 26-year-old cricketer manages to resolve the issues with the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), he could make a comeback into the Indian team as an opening batter.
