Rohit Sharma’s rare reaction to Suryakumar Yadav’s match-winning catch in T20 WC 2024 finals

It has been more than four days since Team India won the T20 World Cup 2024, but the emotions remain alive since the Indian players were struck in Barbados due to Hurricane Beryl.

After Axar Patel conceded 24 runs in the 15th over of the match, South Africa needed 30 runs from 30 balls to win the finals at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown (Barbados).

At that moment, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma introduced fast bowlers to take control of the game. South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen seemed dangerous by scoring 52 runs from 27 balls (including 2 fours and 5 sixes). But, in the 17th over, Hardik Pandya concluded Klaasen’s innings as the wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant took a fantastic catch.

Similarly, in the last over bowled by Hardik Pandya, fans spotted the reaction of Rohit Sharma to Suryakumar Yadav’s incredible catch to dismiss David Miller which became the talk of the town.

T20 World Cup 2024: Hardik’s Last Over, Rohit’s reaction to Suryakumar’s (SKY) catch

South Africa’s hopes of winning the T20 World Cup 2024 were alive when David Miller on strike was ready to face the last over bowled by Hardik Pandya. With 16 runs required from 6 balls, David Miller tried to make use of the wide full toss ball and hit the ball straight down the ground.

The latest video footage recorded an unseen reaction of Rohit Sharma before the catch was taken. Seeing his body language with shoulders dropped to the knee, it was understood that the Indian skipper’s hopes had completely faded as the ball seemed to be clearing the boundary ropes for a six.

However, Suryakumar Yadav came to the rescue by taking a stunning catch at the boundary ropes. It was indeed, one of the greatest catches in cricket history that brought back Team India into the game.

Although SKY wasn’t able to contribute effectively with the bat by scoring just 3 runs from 4 balls, his fielding skills made him the hero of the nation.

Suryakumar exhibited incredible calmness to take a running catch and release the ball in the air as he was about to cross the boundary ropes and then re-entered the field to complete a match-winning catch.

Few people claimed that Suryakumar’s catch was genuine, whereas the remaining others argued that his shoe touched the boundary ropes.  The former South African captain Shaun Pollock voiced his opinion that Suryakumar’s effort was legit and the controversy about his catch is completely baseless.

Suryakumar Yadav Opens Up About his Match Winning Catch

Recently, Suryakumar Yadav explained in a chat with the Indian Express that his catch was clean and was confident that he didn’t touch the boundary ropes:

“This is something unique! Rohit bhai never preferred himself to stand at long-on but at that crucial moment, he was present in that zone. When the ball was approaching for a second, I watched him, and he looked at me. I ran faster, and my only aim was to catch the ball. If he (Rohit Sharma) had been closer, I would have thrown the ball towards him. But, he wasn’t close, and within four to five seconds, whatever happened I’m unable to explain in words.

I am confident that I didn’t touch the rope when I pushed the ball up and inside the playing area. I was cautious that when I moved the ball back inside, my feet didn’t touch the rope and it was a fair catch. Meanwhile, anything could have happened. If the ball had traveled for six, the equation would have been reduced to 10 runs from 5 balls. Although we might have still won, the margin of victory would have been closer,” explained Suryakumar Yadav.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Catch Practice Session: Conclusive Facts

Additionally, Suryakumar Yadav explained how he has been practicing different types of catch practice sessions for many years:

“No! It wasn’t easy! This type of catch, I have been practicing on different grounds, based on the wind speed. I was standing a bit wide since Hardik Pandya and Rohit Bhai had to arrange the field for a wide yorker. David Miller struck the ball in a straight direction. My mindset was clear I had to catch the ball at any cost.

One day before the match, we have a quality fielding session for 10 to 15 minutes, we have practiced more than ten high catches, flat catches, direct hits, and slip catches. You need to know that these exercises are not just for one day. I have practiced these types of catches during IPL and bilateral series. But, the previous day’s catch was the result of the hard work I have done over these years,” said Suryakumar Yadav.

Ultimately, Suryakumar Yadav took two crucial catches in the 20th over bowled by Hardik Pandya to dismiss David Miller and Kagiso Rabada, helping Team India secure a thrilling 7-run victory against South Africa.
