Sting Operation Triggers New Fixing Controversy in Indian Cricket

Fixing Controversy

Indian cricket is once again facing harsh questions about corruption following the recent Tehelka sting operation. This has drawn intense scrutiny on the Delhi Premier League (DPL). Following the increased allegations after the sting operation, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has written a formal letter to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), raising concerns amid the new Fixing Controversy.

The fixing controversy escalated to a peak level after social media users claimed that allegations against the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player Vansh Bedi turned out to be about the unnamed player linked in the sting operation.

Tehelka Sting Operations and DPL Match Fixing Allegations

The Delhi Premier League has now come under the spotlight following the Tehelka sting operation. Rachit Bhatia, the former Ranji cricketer, was reported to have made allegations against teams, including playing XI leaks, betting links, and possible spot-fixing.

As per the reports, Bhatia was alleged to get recorded in a hidden-camera operation without knowing that he was being filmed. The video depicted the former cricketer revealing confidential information ahead of the toss that proved essential for individuals involved in betting.

The investigations revealed that Bhatia leaked the playing XI of Central Delhi Kings ahead of their match against North Delhi Strikers on August 03, 2026. During the same match, the sting operation was conducted.

The 07th match of the DPL 2026 was marred by a corruption scandal as the Tehelka Sting Operations found that the players’ names matched the team’s playing XI revealed by Bhatia for that particular game.

So far, the allegations remain unproven, and the DDCA has clarified that the media’s reports are not 100% verified.

Was Former CSK Player Involved in Spot Fixing?

Based on Rachit Bhatia’s statement, fans on social media guessed Vansh Bedi to be the player involved in spot fixing. However, there is no proof that the former CSK player was found guilty of being involved in corruption activities.

Although Bhatia didn’t reveal the player’s name, he hinted that the individual was a young cricketer contracted with the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings and the DPL team Central Delhi Kings.

However, Bedi finally broke his silence and dismissed the allegations against him, saying that he wasn’t the same person referred to during the sting operation. Also, he warned that strict action would be taken against those spreading false information and defamatory allegations about him.

DDCA Secretary Opens Up About the Match Fixing Controversy

Ashok Sharma, the secretary of DDCA, opened up about the unverified allegations and reports claimed by the media. Here is what the 24-year-old explained:

“See! Why should we immediately jump to any conclusions? After we receive BCCI’s official letter, our anti-corruption department will check everything and check all his details, including his phone records.

As the anti-corruption department belongs to BCCI, the entire system is managed by them. We will abide by it according to BCCI’s instructions and the president’s statement,” the DDCA secretary said.

Response to the Allegations: DDCA Secretary Explains

Furthermore, Ashok Sharma explained that DDCA has planned anti-corruption measures during the Delhi Premier League (DPL). He revealed that the appointment of BCCI-approved officials was to prevent match-fixing and other corrupt activities.

“Yes! We had appointed a special anti-corruption team during DPL worth INR 30 to 35 lakh. BCCI’s anti-corruption unit assigned special officers (called SLOs) to scrutinize the tournament, who travelled with the teams on buses and stayed in the same hotels.

Each one of the eight teams has anti-corruption officers assigned to them. We approved an overall budget of INR 30 lakh for this task. Their goal was to prevent any corruption activities from happening.

Notably, the officers were appointed directly through the BCCI, and we never hired them privately,” the DDCA secretary added.

Evidence From Sting Operation: Valid or Baseless?

Most importantly, Ashok Sharma said that the evidence presented in the sting operation is not completely valid. He stated that the video recordings alone cannot be considered solid proof. He stressed the importance of the league’s own integrity.

Also, the DDCA secretary warned that DPL’s suspension could ruin thousands of youngsters who have participated in the tournament for the past three years.

“No! It was just a recording as far as the evidence is being considered in the sting operation. The footage alone does not constitute conclusive evidence of what really happened.

The league’s reputation and halting the DPL could negatively impact the development opportunities available for thousands of aspiring cricketers involved in the competition three years back.

If the league gets suspended or something happens, just think of the losses that we may face. And the biggest factor is our integrity with the DDCA, which could get affected.

I have spent so many years of my career here, and there has hardly been anyone who pointed us out. Our involvement has always been fueled by the passion for the game,” Ashok explained.

Final Opinion on Fixing Controversy

DDCA stated that based on BCCI’s response to the written letter, further actions will be taken. Moreover, the association is ready to submit video evidence and other supporting proofs if BCCI demands.

At the same time, the DDCA acknowledged that the verifications related to call recordings would require official intervention from investigative authorities.
