Additionally, Shubman Gill’s century against England was the first by any Indian, batting at the No.3 position in test cricket at home after 7 years. Earlier,  Cheteshwar Pujara achieved the three-digit score in a test match batting at 3rd position in November 2017 against Sri Lanka in Nagpur.

How did Shubman Gill’s century against England rescue India?

Shubman Gill’s century against England not only ensured his comeback but also rescued Team India’s collapse during the 2nd innings. In his first 20 deliveries, his lack of confidence was noticeable. He escaped two LBW calls from Tom Hartley and James Anderson when he was at 4 runs.

However, these lucky moments uplifted Shubman Gill’s confidence to score more runs. He struck a four in Tom Hartley’s over and back-to-back boundaries in Rehan Ahmed’s over. Gill’s aggressive approach by making use of his feet to step outside for a boundary and cover drive helped to achieve his half-century in just 60 balls.

The 81-partnership with Shreyas Iyer gave him time to settle and analyze his shots, by allowing him to take quick singles. Iyer, who was looking completely set at the other end, was backing himself against the spin bowling attack. However, he couldn’t sustain his innings longer, falling prey to Tom Hartley by scoring only 29 runs from 52 balls( including 2 fours).

Later, Gill was letting the balls pitch and he was responding in the best possible way he liked.

Particularly, after losing an additional two wickets of Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Pathidar in the first session, Shubman Gill played with more composure after the lunch. He maintained another partnership of 89 runs with Axar Patel by regularly rotating the strike.

Additionally, he took another 10 balls to score the remaining 8 runs. Ultimately, Gill succeeded in accomplishing his century in just 132 balls.
