Shakib returns as Bangladesh announced squads for West Indies ODIs

Shakib returns as Bangladesh

In what is touted to be big news for the Bangladesh cricket team, former captain Shakib Al Hasan is all set to return to the national side after serving his stipulated ban under the ICC regulations. The former skipper has been selected for the 18 member squad for the series against the West Indies. Bangladesh is scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against the nation and the stakes are high as Bangladesh hopes to get back to winning ways after the pandemic.

Bangladesh vs West Indies ODIs Review

The long-awaited tour of West Indies in Bangladesh is all set to begin from 20th January at the Sher e Bangla Stadium, Dhaka. The series shall consist of three ODI matches and two tests.

Among the ODI matches, two of the matches will be played at Sher e Bangla stadium and the third ODI shall be played at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram. Bangladesh vs West Indies shall be the first time that both the teams return to the cricketing field after the long hiatus due to the global pandemic situation. Considering the long gap; and the fact that the soon to be held series is to be a part of the ICC Super League that would be essential for qualification to the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Among other things, the series has also come under scrutiny for the absence of DRS during the first ODI match. For the uninitiated DRS or the Decision Reviewing System is a system that allows the on-field umpires to consult the third umpire for a review of the decisions; upon the request of the players. This confusion regarding the availability of the DRS has proved to be quite the conundrum since the match acting as an extended qualifier for the world cup should ideally have the DRS. When asked about the ensuing confusion, Bangladesh cricket committee chairman Jalal Yunus said,

“DRS will surely be there but one issue of DRS is that our engineer is supposed to come from London. You know that England has the Covid Protocol that suggests that the first four days out of 14 days must be in isolation; which means four days in government isolation.”

He also noted,

“We have applied to the Ministry of Health for this and at the same time we have spoken with the Covid Authority who look after it. So let’s see what happens now. But if we can manage the engineer on time then maybe on the 20th there will be no problem. Otherwise the problem of DRS will be solved after this match.”

Shakib Al Hasan returns after ban

Shakib Al Hasan is returning to be on the national side after facing a 12 match ban by the ICC. After he has failed to report multiple corrupt approaches during the tri-series and an IPL match. His return to the side would be crucial as the Bangladesh side would look to benefit from his ample experience.

Apart from Hasan; the board also selected all-rounder Mahedi Hasan and pace bowlers Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam to the side. The three new additions are debutants making their first foray into international cricket with this tour. Talking about the large 18 members strong squad for a home tour, chief selector Minhajul Abedin noted,

“We took several extra players because we are facing a pandemic now. You cannot add a player to the squad anytime in this kind of situation… Our three uncapped players Mahedi, Hasan and Shoriful have all done well in domestic cricket recently. We included them because we thought it’s also a time for us to look for the future.”

This is the first series that the Bangladesh ODIs squad is all set to play; ever since Mashrafe Mortaza stepped down as the captain. His exclusion from the team could point to the side’s fresh approach under the experienced Tamim Iqbal as captain.

Conclusion

The Bangladesh vs West Indies series is bound to be important for a lot of reasons. It would be indicative of Bangladesh’s abilities to host international matches. Apart from that it would also show the bench strength both of these teams have going into major ICC tournaments in the months to come. Whatever it be, the series promises to be a cracker of a tournament.
