Windies cricketer of year: Shai Hope and Stafanie Taylor were announced as Windies male and female cricketers of the year respectively, with the former also winning the Test cricketer of the year and ODI cricketer of the year honours at the awards ceremony held in Barbados on Wednesday (June 20). This was the sixth joint awards (Cricket West Indies and West Indies Players Association) which recognised achievements for the year 2017.

Hope scored 773 runs in Test cricket in 2017 at an average 45.47 with two hundreds and three fifties from 10 matches to top the run-getters chart for Windies in the year. He marginally bettered Roston Chase, who scored 740 runs at 43.52 with two hundreds and four half-centuries.

Hope also topped the run-scorers’ list in ODIs, accumulating 600 runs at 33.33 with four fifty-plus scores. Taylor won the awards for the ODI segment for Women after finishing 2017 as the leading run-getter for Windies in Women’s ODIs – 296 runs at 32.88, including three fifties.

Evin Lewis bagged the T20 cricketer of the year award after ending 2017 with 357 runs in nine games, which included an unbeaten 125 against India in Kingston. Deandra Dottin, the second best in the Women’s ODI chart for Windies in 2017, won the Women’s T20 cricketer of the year award. She hit a 67-ball 112 in a T20I against Sri Lanka which helped her become the first Women cricketer with two T20I hundreds.
