The inaugural edition of the Road Safety World Series 2021 is scheduled to be held from March 5 to March 21 at the newly-built Shahid Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium of Raipur, which has a seating capacity of 65000.
Due to COVID-19 related restrictions, only half of the seating capacity will be filled though. The series is bound to be a star-studded one, for it shall feature multiple retired cricketing stars, including Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Brian Lara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jaysuriya, and Kevin Pietersen among others. The series is being held to create awareness about road safety among people.
The entire series will be held under the supervision of legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, who is the Commissioner of the Series. The Road Safety Cell of the Maharashtra Police and the Profession Management Group (PMG) are conducting this series together. The first edition of the tournament took place in March 2020 but was then called off due to the pandemic after four games were held on the 11th of March. There are a total of six teams playing in the road safety world series tournament – India Legends, West Indies Legends, Bangladesh Legends, England Legends and South Africa Legends. With all the big names in every squad, this road safety world series tournament does look promising. Initially, Australia Legends were also supposed to play. But they pulled out due to the travel restrictions owing to the pandemic. England Legends and Bangladesh Legends are the two new teams who have joined the tournament.
All the teams boast of big names who have played and made their presence felt in world cricket for a long time. Their return to active cricket through one of the most exciting versions of the game for such an important cause does make it a very important series to watch. Fans of the game, who had been deprived of live matches during the pandemic will be extremely jubilant to know about the series and will be looking forward to the games.
