Islamabad United lifts its 3rd PSL trophy in the Last-Ball Thriller

Islamabad United lifts its 3rd PSL trophy

Islamabad United once again claimed the title of defending champions for the third time by defeating Multan Sultans in a last-ball thriller to become the PSL 2024 winner in the finals. On 18th March 2024( Monday), Islamabad United became the most successful team in the Pakistan Super League to win the trophy three times (in the years 2016, 2018 and 2024).

Shadab Khan’s led side once again dominated with their strong batting performance and proved why Islamabad United are the chase masters of the PSL 2024 tournament. Especially, Imad Wasim’s bowling performance and Hunain Shah’s last ball cameo were the standout moments that stole the entire show from Multan Sultans and gave adrenaline-pumping moments for fans.

Shockingly, Multan Sultans becomes the first team to undergo a hat trick of losses in the PSL finals, despite being the table toppers of the 9th season.

You would be curious to know how Islamabad United became the PSL 2024 winner and what challenges they faced in the final match to secure a 2-wicket win. Also, you will find it interesting to find the list of award winners.

Most Importantly, the prize money for the PSL 2024 winner team and runner-up side will be revealed in detail in comparison to that of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL).

How did Islamabad United become the PSL 2024 winner?

One of the prime reasons why Islamabad United became the PSL 2024 winner is because of their chasing abilities in the entire tournament. Out of 8 matches batting second, Islamabad United won 6 of them which proves

According to the experts’ prediction, a team’s skipper should have opted to field first on a batting-friendly track such as the National Stadium at Karachi. It is because the ball comes onto the bat easily during the 2nd innings of the match.

Conversely, Mohammad Rizwan, the Multan Sultans captain, decided to bat first which completely backfired his plans. Earlier this year, Islamabad United successfully chased the 3rd highest target in PSL history against the same team by scoring 232 runs in 20 overs.

Imad Wasim’s 5-wicket haul (23-5 in 4 overs) restricted Multan Sultans to an average score of 159-9 in 20 overs. Additionally, the Islamabad United skipper Shadab Khan provided a backup to Imad Wasim by taking 3 wickets (32-3 in 4  overs). Mainly, the contribution of Usman Khan’s half-century of 57 runs from 40 balls (including 7 fours and 1 six) along with Iftikhar Ahmed playing a finisher role by scoring 32 runs from just 20 balls ( including 3 fours and 3 sixes) set a target of 160 runs against Islamabad United.

On the other side, Martin Guptill as Islamabad United opener scored 50 runs from 32 balls ( including 4 fours and 3 sixes) which revived his side from a shaky start.

Thrilling Moments of the Last over for Islamabad United to become PSL 2024 Winner:

The last over of the match was the game-changer of the tournament. After Martin’s dismissal, three other batsmen fell prey to Multan Sultans bowlers in quick succession namely:

  • Azam Khan (30 runs from 22 balls- including 4 fours and 1 six): At 121-5 in 15.3 overs
  • Haider Ali (5 runs from 3 balls- including 1 four): At 128-6 in 16.2 overs
  • Faheem Ashraf ( 1 run from 4 balls): At 129-7 in 17.1 overs

The situation seemed easier for Multan Sultans as they needed just 3 wickets to win the match. However, Naseem Shah kept the hopes alive for Islamabad United till the final over by scoring an instant 17 runs from just 9 balls ( including 2 fours and 1 six). Also, Imad Wasim ensured to save his wicket by steadily scoring 19 runs from 17 balls (including 2 fours).

With 8 runs required off the final over, Naseem Shah smashed a four in the 2nd ball of the over. As 1 run was required from 2 balls, Naseem attempted to smash the winning runs but was finally dismissed by Mohammad Ali.

Finally, Hunain Shah finished the match in style by striking a four off the final delivery and Islamabad United became the PSL 2024 winner in a final-ball thriller of the match.
