The fourteenth edition of the Indian Premier League has been a source of mass entertainment in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases all around the country. Punjab Kings are set to face the mighty IPL team from Tamil Nadu, Chennai Super Kings. The eighth match of the season will be played out on Friday from 7:30 pm, once again in the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. No fans will be allowed inside the stadium as the game will be played behind closed doors.
Chennai Super Kings, who sit at the bottom of the table will look ahead to win this match and climb to a more promising spot. Royal Challengers Bangalore have fixated their position on the top after winning two out of the two matches they played in IPL 2021. Punjab Kings who just have just won the first match of the season are in the fourth position.
The Wankhede Stadium has always been in favor of the batting side. A team with powerful opening order can probably hand their opponents a bulky total. The pitch offers a fairly good amount of bounce and eventually turns the ball at the end of the match. Hence it will not prove to be a vantage point for the spinners. For teams like Punjab Kings with a stronger batting line-up than Chennai will probably choose to bat first here.
Punjab Kings Team News
Punjab Kings’ sheer display of brilliance in batting was almost shunned down by Sanju Samson on Monday. King’s handed a target of 221 runs and could not savor a sigh of relief until the last ball of the over. As the loss seemed quite imminent, Punjab won the match by a whisker of 5 runs, as Deepak Hooda caught Sanju Samson on the edge of the boundary on the very last ball of the match. Punjab displayed a strengthened character as they did not lose hope and kept on defending the bulky total.
KL Rahul’s performance was once again a display of how brutal and difficult he is for bowlers. His brilliant inning of 91 runs coming off just 50 balls is proof enough. He could have registered the first hundred of this year’s IPL but was sent walking to the pavilion by the newcomer Chetan Sakariya.
Punjab Kings will look forward to reinforcing their bowling attack as it did not look very hard to breach. Their brand new acquisitions Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith proved to be very expensive as they gave away a lot of runs.
No changes are expected in the playing eleven.
Predicted Eleven– Arshdeep Singh, Jhye Richardson(Overseas), Nicholas Pooran(Overseas), Deepak Hooda, Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle(Overseas), Riley Meredith(Overseas), Murugan Ashwin, Shahrukh Khan, Mohammed Shami KL Rahul (C and WK).
Chennai Super Kings Team News
Although it would be too early to say that Chennai has lost its fearful presence in the IPL, their performances do not speak in favor of them. Chennai clung to a last-minute miracle to see themselves off Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan’s pair eventually turned out ruthless and formidable and there seemed nothing that the bowlers could do to get the partnership over. Chennai did not introduce any of their new acquisitions in the playing eleven last time. It might not be the case this time around. Cheteshwar Pujara might get named in the playing eleven as he could be the reliable opening order batsman they have been looking for.
Predicted Eleven– Faf Du Plessis(Overseas), Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali(Overseas), Sam Curran(Overseas), Dwayne Bravo(Overseas), Ambati Rayudu, Deepak Chahar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni (C and WK), Shardul Thakur, Suresh Raina,
Chennai Super Kings emerge as the obvious dominators in this fixture with 14 wins out of the 23 matches played between them. The opening season saw Chennai register a mammoth total of 240 against Punjab Kings. Even though an age-old match, it remains the highest total scored in this fixture. Wankhede has been a hard and dry pitch as always, thus it is safe to say that a score of 180 to 190 runs will not be too demanding, given the powerful batting line-up these teams possess. The last time Chennai and Punjab locked horns, KL Rahul was handed a defeat by an unrattled Chennai, who pulled up 181 runs without losing a wicket.
A battle of Punjab Kings which will see no half-hearted efforts to establish who is the better of the two.
