Swashbuckling all-rounder Axar Patel, who is a part of the Delhi Capitals squad in the Indian Premier League 2021 has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus on Saturday, 03/04/2021. The Indian Premier League 2021, which is supposed to be held in India after two years will begin on Friday; the 09th of April, 2021 with a match between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Mumbai.
The Delhi Capitals are supposed to have their first match the very next day, the 10th of April 2021. DC will play against Chennai Super Kings in Mumbai. Axar Patel illness has certainly dealt a huge blow to Delhi Capitals; which was the runners-up in the Indian Premier League last year.
How it happened
The media release of the DC claimed that Axar Patel had arrived on the bio-bubble facility in Mumbai on the 28th of March, 2021. It is to be mentioned that all cricket around the world is being played with players being kept in bio-bubbles strictly to avoid the virus. On arrival, Axar had undergone a test in which he had a negative report.
However, he tested positive recently. Axar Patel is now in isolation at a designated medical care facility. The Delhi Capitals team has been practicing at the Cricket Club of India; which is also known as the Brabourne Stadium. He is the second player after Nitish Rana of the Kolkata Knight Riders to test positive. Both the players have been kept under strict medical observation and are known to be recuperating well. The Delhi Capitals team has wished him a speedy recovery too.
Axar Patel Importance
Axar Patel has emerged to be an important player in the Indian cricketing circuit, especially in the past few months. He played well in the recently concluded England tour of India. His skills with the ball has been greatly appreciated by many in test cricket. He made his debut in test cricket in the second test of the four-match test series that the tour began with.
Axar Patel picked up multiple five-wicket hauls and got a total of 27 wickets in the course of the series; equalling the record of Dilip Doshi for the most number of wickets picked up by any Indian on his maiden test series. He did not play in the ODIs, but was there for the first T20I that the two teams played against each other. Axar has been a regular in the Indian Premier League. He has often churned out wickets for the team he has been playing for.
The BCCI has devised an elaborate set of norms and regulations for conducting the tournament amidst the pandemic. The suspected or positive players are to be isolated from the rest of the team immediately for at least 10 days from the first day of symptoms or from the date of collection of the sample for the RT-PCR test, whichever is earlier. The local authorities shall be notified of the case and the treatment shall take place following the guidelines laid down by the local government. Contract tracing shall take place immediately. All individuals who have been in contact with the person in the last 48 hours will be isolated and tested.
The individual who has tested positive shall be advised complete rest during these 10 days and shall be hospitalized immediately if the symptoms worsen. The individual will have to undergo the RT-PCR test consecutively on the 9th and 10th day. Only if they test negative in both the tests and if they stop having symptoms. will they be allowed to join the bio-secure bubble again? The BCCI has laid down a host of rules to ensure the safety of players in the bio-secure bubbles. Every player arriving from outside needs to be quarantined for seven days mandatorily before joining the bio-secure bubbles.
As the situation worsens around the entire country; it is indeed brave of the BCCI to go ahead with the Indian Premier League. The organization had rightly laid down a host of rules to protect its own players from the virus and conduct the tournament safely. Given how the management of the virus has been till now; it seems that the Indian Premier League 2021 will go well and safe.
