India vs Sri Lanka, 2nd T20I match preview

India and Sri Lanka meet on Thursday, January 5 in the second match of the three-match T20I series. The Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune will host the thrilling match.

The inaugural T20I on Tuesday at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai proved to be a thrilling affair. The Men in Blue, captained by Hardik Pandya, took their third closest T20I victory after taking a win in two races.

The Indian team made a huge effort to beat Sri Lanka in a thrilling match at Wankhede Stadium. After being given a wild card to bat first, India put up 162/5, but it was not a good batting performance from the Men in Blue. Had Axar Patel and Deepak Hooda not played the last six overs at a fast pace, India would have finished with a much lower total. However, Hooda, Patel, and Ishan Kishan were all impressed with the bat. But it was debutant Shivam Mavi who stole the show with his four-wicket haul. The fast-swinging right arm took wickets in front and on the wing side to ensure India stayed in the game. Now the hosts will try to make amends and take an unassailable lead.

Sri Lanka Team Preview

Sri Lanka played as expected. Their spinners dictated the terms early in the innings, but the pacers let the game slip into the death overs. However, the batters tried to make the game, but the team ended up short by two runs. Captain Dasun Shanaka again led from the front and scored a fast 45. Wanindu Hasaranga also lived up to his role. Chamika Karunaratne also gave her best, but a few mistakes here and there cost Sri Lanka a well-deserved victory. However, the Asian Cup champions will pat themselves on the back and arrive with all guns on fire in the second T20I.

With Sri Lanka needing 13 runs to win the final, Axar Patel gave up a six to Chamika Karunaratne as the target came back to five runs in the last three balls. However, Patel held on as India won the game to take a crucial 1-0 lead.

Earlier, Axar Patel was also involved in a 68-run unbeaten run alongside Deepak Hooda who scored 41 for 23 to win Man of the Match. Shivam Mavi was also impressive as he became the third Indian men’s bowler after Barinder Sran and Pragyan Ojha took a haul of four wickets on his T20I debut.

Arshdeep Singh did not play as the BCCI revealed he was recovering from an illness. As for Sri Lanka, they have lost 11 T20I in a row against India in India’s backyard since 2016 and will be desperate to get back.
