The second match of the five-match T20I series between India and England is supposed to be held on the 14th of March, 2021 at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. The match is slated to begin at 07:00 pm IST and 01:30 GMT. England has been touring India for some time now, and they lost the four-match test series 3-1 to the home side.
England had begun its tour on a high note, having won the very first match of the test series. India was demoralised after the defeat it suffered in the first match, but it made an extraordinary turnaround in the following matches, with the able contributions of all its players. Its spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel were in terrific form and they decimated the English batting order repeatedly in spin-friendly conditions. This T20I series is thus quite important because England would be aiming to prove its mettle in this series.
The Last Match
England won the very first match of the T20I series. This win has given the team a lot of confidence which it hopes to capitalise on for the remaining matches in this series. In the last match, India had batted first. The English pace trio of Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Chris Jordan bowled brilliantly and restricted India to 124 for 7 in 20 overs.
The hosts received multiple blows right in the beginning of the match, as they were reduced to 22 for 3 during the powerplay. The only exception to the general batting performances of the Indian team was Shreyas Iyer, who scored 67 off 48 balls. Archer achieved his career best of 3 off 23 in his four overs. England had a much smoother run while batting. Jason Roy and Jos Buttler, who are both known for their hitting skills, began the chase with a 72 run partnership, with Roy becoming the top scorer of the English innings with 49 runs.
The English players have been troubled by the spin during the test series and thus they have been practising playing it a lot in the course of the T20I series. They are armed to face the onslaught of Indian spinners and are confident about their abilities after the win in the first match. Both India and England have had formidable records in T20Is. England has often been called the best T20I side in the world currently. Before the series began, both the teams had similar records in the past few matches. Both England and India had lost only one match out of the last five T20Is they had played. Thus, the competition is quite strong between the two teams.
The T20 World Cup is looming up in the future. It is supposed to be held in India in October 2021. This series is a dry run of the same, and is providing an opportunity to both the teams to assess where they are standing before the World Cup begins. Both the teams are thus even more eager to prove their mettle.
India can make changes to its playing XI. It might drop Axar Patel or Washington Sundar for Navdeep Saini to strengthen its pace battery. England largely will be persisting with the same squad unless any injury or niggle happens to its players.
India playing XI (tentative): KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli (captain), Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar/Navdeep Saini, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal
England playing XI (tentative): Jos Buttler, Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, Sam Curran, Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood
The pitch of the Motera Stadium is supposed to remain the same. In the beginning, it might be a bit difficult to play on, but then it would gradually become easier to bat on it. There might be a bit of impact made on it by the dew however.
India and England have faced each other in T20I matches for a total of 15 times. Out of these 15 times, India has won 7 times whereas England has won 8 times. India will be looking to strengthen itself for the upcoming World Cup and better its record against England in this match. England will look at capturing this series after losing badly to India in the test series. Both the teams have extremely talented players. Overall, this match promises good cricket to the fans of the game.
