The England tour of India takes a new turn as 50-over ODI matches begin from the 23rd of March. Saturday saw the end of the five-match T20 series between the cricketing giants, India and England. The decisive match in Ahmedabad, saw India emerge victorious after a hard-fought battle between both sides. The Indians have outplayed the English visitors in both Test and twenty-over matches. As the one-day internationals begin, England will definitely look forward to winning the series with that extra finishing touch they have been lacking.
The ODI series which would complete England’s tour in India is set to be hosted at the Maharashtra Cricket Stadium(MCA); in Pune, between 23rd to 28th of March. The MCA which was earlier known as Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium has a good batting track and has previously hosted England in 2016. England’s first innings in the first ODI soared up to an excessive 350; the highest runs scored in this ground and went down in the history books as one of the successful run chases by India. It is a tricky bowling surface and both England and India would heavily rely on the spinners as later in the game the ball tends to grip off the surface.

India will look forward to continuing its fantastic run in the series. Virat Kohli and his men have handed England heavy defeats in both Test and T20s and plan to go into the ODIs with the same mindset. They travel from Ahmedabad to Pune after coming from behind to win the series 3-2. The Board of Cricket Association India has announced a strong 18-member squad for the upcoming ODIs. Three uncapped players, Suryakumar Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, and Krunal Pandya, might be seen making their debut in the upcoming series.
Suryakumar Yadav, who has been in a blistering form of late, has earned his rightful international call-up. Yadav’s mind-blowing 57 off 31 balls in the fourth T20, formed India’s revival in the series. Unfortunately, he was seen walking into the pavilion after Dawid Malan’s controversial catch. Krunal Pandya and Krishna, both of whom featured in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, have caught the selector’s eye with their good performances.
The right-arm fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah who missed the 5-match T20 series is not included in the ODI squad as well.
India’s 18-man ODI squad is given below,
India Squad: Virat Kohli (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma (VC), Suryakumar Yadav. KL Rahul (Wk), Rishabh Pant (Wk), Md. Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Krunal Pandya. W Sundar, Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan, Y Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, Hardik Pandya.

England’s cricketing standards have not been up to the mark in this tour. Despite their good start in both Test and T20, the English team somehow managed to crash out of it. Eoin Morgan and his team lacked consistency in their T20 performances and will look forward to boosting their team morale with a fresh squad on Tuesday. This ODI series is a part of the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League; where England currently sits on the third spot with 3 wins and 3 losses. Although India has played fewer matches than England, they have a big ladder to climb. India’s defeat against Australia in the ODI series 2-1 has surely given England an edge.
The English team announced their 14-man squad traveling to Pune. Jofra Archer, the right-arm fast bowler is not a part of the squad and has apparently returned to England for further check-ups of his right elbow injury. The England Cricket Board(ECB) made it clear that his elbow injury had been a big concern during the 5-match 20-over series and has thus been declared unfit for selection. The Rajasthan Royals fast bowler will be missing both the twenty-over series and the start of IPL. His injury would cause quite a dent in the England team; as the fast bowler had made himself a regular starter and an integral part of the bowling line-up.
Furthermore, ECB declared three other English players who would travel to Pune with the squad, as a cover. All of these three, Dawid Malan, Chris Jordan, and Jake Ball, have been part of the T20 International in Ahmedabad.
The English squad for the ODI is as follows,
England Squad: Eoin Morgan (captain), Moeen Ali, Tom Curran, Sam Billings. Reece Topley, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Mark Wood, Liam Livingstone. Matt Parkinson, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Jonathan Bairstow.
The ODI matches to be played out in Pune will not have any in-person attendance just like the T20 matches, due to the increasing Covid-19 cases. Hopefully, the absence of fans will not hamper the game’s intensity as the two big international cricketing giants take on each other, from Tuesday.
