Evergreen MS Dhoni Continues to Set the Bar for Fitness

Almost a decade and a half since he broke onto the international scene, India’s wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni continues to push the bar higher as far as fitness is concerned for the Indian cricket team.

“MS Dhoni is still the fittest of them all in the Indian team,” former India physical trainer Ramji Srinivasan was quoted by the Times of India. Ramji worked with the 2018 IPL Champions Chennai Super Kings and in the recently completed season one of the most talked about things was Dhoni’s incredible fitness levels.

The CSK camp began their partnership with Ramji a fortnight before the tournament with a fitness camp to help prepare the squad of players from different age groups. Reflecting on the camp and the tournament, Ramji said, “Dhoni led by example.”

Ahead of a camp in Bangalore to assess the fitness of close 40-odd cricketers in the early part of June, the former India trainer believes Dhoni’s fitness will continue to set the standard for some time to come. “Between the 5th and the 10th, fitness tests alone will be the priority,” say BCCI sources.

Earlier in May, the national selectors announced five different squads for India and India ‘A’ keeping in mind the calendar that has the one-off Test against Afghanistan, T20s against Ireland and England, ODIs against England, India ‘A’ ODIs against England Lions and West Indies ‘A’ and India ‘A’ four-day matches.

Along with the compulsory yo-yo tests that the cricketers will undergo, the BCCI is believed to be planning DEXA scans for dual-energy absorptiometry. This scan is understood to be the standard for the measurement of body composition and bone health – a 10-minute test that measures total body fat and includes the exact breakdown of bone mass, fat tissue, and muscle in your body.

With fitness remaining a top priority with extremely challenging season, the 36-year-old Dhoni continues to remain the yardstick for the younger lot of cricketers. “Look at the shape he’s in, considering he’s not playing round the year. Extremely impressive. He’s the one from who the rest should be seeking inspiration,” says Ramji.
