Jasprit Bumrah’s Open Statement on Retirement Plans During India’s Felicitation

On 4th July 2024 (Thursday), Indian cricket team fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah confirmed that he doesn’t have any plans to retire from the T20 Internationals (T20Is). The 30-year-old Indian pacer gave a straightforward answer saying that he has a long way to go when asked about his retirement in the shortest format of the game.

After the trio of Indian cricketers namely Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja declared their retirement in T20Is, there have been several questions about Bumrah’s retirement.

Jasprit Bumrah played a crucial role in Team India’s success in lifting the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy for the first time after 2007. He took 15 wickets in 8 matches at an economy rate of 8.26 and became the third-highest wicket-taker of the tournament, as the Afghanistan pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi stands at the leading position in this list (17 wickets).

However, it was in the finals when Bumrah’s best performance came into the spotlight during the death overs to prevent South Africa from achieving their maiden World Cup title in Barbados.  He took 2 important wickets and conceded just 18 runs in his 4-over spell at an economy rate of 4.50, which halted South African batters’ momentum to score runs freely.

During the felicitation in Mumbai, Virat Kohli showered praises on his teammate Bumrah. He said that his bowling skills helped India bounce back from a tricky situation when the South African middle order batter Heinrich Klaasen single-handedly reduced the chase to 30 required off the final 30 balls. However, Bumrah conceded just 6 runs in his last 2 overs to leave South African batters clueless before they surrendered to a 7-run loss.

Jasprit Bumrah About his Retirement Plans

When Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja announced their retirement from T20Is, Jasprit Bumrah confirmed that he is here to stay for his team in all formats of cricket during the grand event at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai:

“No! Not Now! It’s (about Bumrah’s retirement plans) a long way away. Right now, the retirement is not a part of my plan. However, I am satisfied that I have performed well.
I have just begun, and I hope that this question remains far. I hope it is far away now”,
said Bumrah when he was unexpectedly asked a question about his retirement from T20Is during the felicitation ceremony.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Joyful Moment Upon Fans Reaction

Seeing fans gathered in huge numbers, Jasprit Bumrah expressed his emotions:

“Amazing! This ground (Wankhede Stadium) is something special in my life. As an Under-19 kid, I came here, and I haven’t witnessed anything like this that I have seen today on this ground, on the streets, and a huge crowd over here. Experiencing this kind of emotion after the game is unbelievable. The people around here and these wonderful memories I will never forget and will remain with me,” Bumrah said.

Jasprit Bumrah Feels Himself as a Young Cricketer

Bumrah wants to feel himself as one of the young cricketers and wants to bring more pride to the country:

“It’s a great moment. I want to consider myself a young lad as well. Despite the tricky situations, all the players were confident to take the game, with the presence of the experienced players and the enthusiasm that we had throughout the tournament. As Rohit and Virat said, our main target is to take Indian cricket to the next level and help the team as much as we can with our best contributions to bring more glory to our nation. Since we have never won a World Cup in the past 13 years, this victory gives us a high level of motivation,” said Bumrah.

Virat Kohli Praises About Jasprit Bumrah during the Felicitation

During the grand event in Mumbai, Virat Kohli heaped praises on his teammate Jasprit Bumrah by explaining how he turned the match in India’s favor:

“This was something unexpected! Similar to the fans feeling in the stadium, we all were thinking that the game was going out of our control. But, the contribution from Bumrah in the final five overs of this T20 World Cup final match was truly incredible. He once again brought our team back into the game. We are lucky enough to have him in the playing XI. I would request all the fans here to please join me in giving Jasprit Bumrah a huge round of applause for his extraordinary efforts in this tournament,” said Virat Kohli.

Conclusion:

Jasprit Bumrah’s consistent performance throughout this 9th edition of the T20 World Cup made him achieve the “Player of the Tournament” award. He becomes the second Indian player after Virat Kohli to achieve this award in T20 World Cups. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to participate in the previous edition’s T20 World Cup since he had to undergo surgery in the lower back, which left a huge void in Team India’s bowling line-up.

Bumrah single-handedly helped India triumph over their arch-rival Pakistan in the group stages and once again in the finals he came to the rescue for Rohit Sharma’s led side when they found themselves in a tough situation

Based on his statement, Jasprit Bumrah is determined to play for India in all formats for another 5 to 10 years of his career. With 89 wickets in 69 innings, the entire cricket world is eager to watch if Jasprit Bumrah can become the leading wicket-taker in the T20I format and attain new milestones by continuing to play for another ten years or more.
