Bangladesh Vs West Indies 2nd Test Preview

Bangladesh Vs West Indies

Bangladesh are very much the wounded tigers as they look to bounce back from the defeat they endured at the hands of a depleted West Indies side in Chattogram. West Indies, who were very much the underdog in this series, performed exceptionally well and thanks to debutant Kyle Mayer’s incredible unbeaten 210 in the fourth innings.

The Windies won in the fifth highest run chase in Test history. Bangladesh were, quite frankly, outplayed in the first chase and would look to give a fitting reply to the visitors, after the hosts whitewashed them in the ODI series.

Match Preview

For the second and final test match of the series, the action moves to the nation’s capital in Dhaka. The Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur will play host to this game which predicts to be a high-intensity thriller.

The match will be played from February 11th, 2021, and is scheduled to end on the 16th of February, 2021. The pitch at Mirpur has always been the typical subcontinent pitch which offers plenty of runs on the first sessions before coming to aid of the spinners. But, there is no imminent danger for cricketing fans to miss out on the game due to rain, as the weather report in Dhaka is all clear for the next five days.

Bangladesh Team Selection

The last few days have not been good for the hosts. After their tremendous performances in the ODI series, the mood in the Bangladesh camp has been seriously dented after they failed to defend 395 runs on the final day of the first test. On top of that, they have been dealt with a double blow with opener Shadman Islam and mercurial all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, both expected to miss the final test of the series.

Shakib has failed to recover from the groin/thigh injury he suffered in the first test, while Shadman Islam too will miss the game as Bangladesh Cricket’s medical team didn’t give him the green signal after his awkward fall during fielding during the fourth day’s play in the first test. Veteran batsman Soumya Sarkar has been called in as a replacement for Shakib Al Hasan, but the Bangladesh board hasn’t named a replacement yet for Shadman Islam.

Yet, for captain Mominul Haque, moving on from that heartbreaking defeat with an emphatic win would do some good to the Bengal Tiger’s dented pride. He would be looking for a rousing response from his team. Mehdi Hasan Miraz was in tremendous form in the first test scoring a hundred and picking up 8 wickets. The Bangledeshi fans would also be looking at spinners Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hassan while batsmen Tamim Iqbal and Mominul Haque are being expected to post big scores on the board.

West Indies Team Selection

The West Indies team achieved a miracle in the last test as they pulled off the highest run chase ever on Asian soil. Lauded by fans and experts all over the world, the West Indies team has their feet firmly on the ground. Skipper Kraigg Braithwaite, who looks in good touch with the bat, has warned the team of complacency while Nkrumah Bonner, who played a pivotal 86 runs in that historic run chase, has claimed that the West Indies side would be starting from zero again in the second test.

All eyes would now be on the all-rounder from Barbados, Kyle Mayers. His 210 not out has broken records to be the highest fourth innings score in the continent of Asia and he will be looking to continue his form for this match as well. Spinner Jomel Warrican picked up 7 wickets in the previous match and he will be looking to better that feat. Other bowlers including pacer Shannon Gabriel and spinner Rahkeem Cornwall could also perform well in this match. The other positive thing for West Indies is that there is no news of any injuries in the side.

The West Indies side had truly shocked everyone with their miraculous win in the first test match, despite being the underdogs throughout the campaign. Now, no one is willing to label them as the underdogs, for the picture looks much more balanced now.

No doubt the pitch and the conditions will favour the home side, but Bangladesh cannot be called the out and out favourites to win this game. Overall, it promises to be a cracking encounter between these two sides with Bangladesh hoping for a win to get their pride restored.
