Ravichandran Ashwin withdraws from the Rajkot Test due to family medical emergency

Ashwin withdraws Rajkot Test

On 16th February 2024, Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin withdraws from the Rajkot test citing a family medical emergency. It was a big blow for Team India to resume Day 3 of the test match against England with just 10 players along with a substitute fielder Devdutt Padikkal. In other words, India had to go with just 4 bowlers in the red-ball cricket.

However, the Indian cricket team wrapped up England’s innings to 319-10 in 71.1 overs. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma ensured the bowling attack remained consistent even in Ashwin’s absence. Mohammed Siraj’s 4-wicket haul tamed England’s Bazball strategy.

The BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla confirmed that Ashwin wanted to be with his mother who unexpectedly became ill. Furthermore, Shukla said that Ashwin’s mother was hospitalized in Chennai.

Ravichandran Ashwin had a remarkable day with both bat and ball on the second day of the third test match. He scored 37 runs from 89 balls (including 6 fours) in the 1st innings. Consequently, his innings propelled India to a total of 455-10 in 130.5 overs. Additionally, the off-spinner broke the threatening 89-run opening stand between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett.

Moreover, Ravichandran Ashwin achieved his 500th test wicket by dismissing England opener Zak Crawley on Day 2. Notably, he became the 2nd Indian bowler to achieve this feat after the former legendary cricketer Anil Kumble.

Also, he became the 2nd fastest international bowler to achieve 500 test wickets, with Muttiah Muralitharan leading with his record.

After achieving the crucial milestone of his test cricket career, Ashwin withdraws from the Rajkot test. The 37-year-old cricketer traveled immediately to Chennai to be along with his ailing mother.

Reasons why Ravichandran Ashwin withdraws from the Rajkot Test?

Ashwin’s mother Chitra has been the prime reason behind his rise in cricket. Indeed, she became Ashwin’s first coach. His father Ravichandran used to take him around different matches and provide training after observing the minute moments of his spin bowling techniques. Chitra mainly advised him to take up spin bowling rather than become a fast bowler.

During his young days, Chitra interrupted Ashwin’s practice sessions in nets whenever he opted for pace bowling. She suggested that the extended run-up for pace bowling wasn’t suitable and advised him to start practicing spin.

Earlier, Ashwin mentioned that his parents enrolled him in Carnatic music classes since Chitra enjoyed them. However, the young boy had different plans and eventually chose cricket.

While speaking to Jio Cinema, Chitra congratulated her son’s achievement after taking 500 test wickets in the ongoing series against England.

The BCCI ensured that while Ashwin withdraws from the Rajkot test, the nature of the family’s medical emergency shouldn’t be revealed to respect privacy.

Finally, it becomes clear that Ashwin wouldn’t be available for the remaining two test matches of the series in Ranchi ( 25th to 29th February) and Dharamsala (7th to 11th March).

As Ravichandran Ashwin withdraws from the Rajkot Test, Team India not only fell short for a spin bowler but also a handy batsman and a fielder as well. Considering the spin bowling department, Team India has Washington Sundar is in the squad. The other replacement options outside the squad include Jayant Yadav and Jalaj Saxena along with the young player Pulkit Narang.

Earlier, Virat Kohli chose to opt himself out of the entire series due to personal reasons. Now, Ravichandran Ashwin had to leave out of the ongoing test series to prioritize family over national commitment.

Despite Team India opted Devdutt Padikkal as a substitute fielder for Ashwin, cannot bat or ball. As a result, Team India has to bat with only 10 players in the ongoing test match. At the end of Day 3, India concluded with 196-2 in 31 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored another magnificent ton against England which kept India lead by 322 runs.
