Hosts England will look to hit back after West Indies opened the test summer with an excellent win in Southampton. England welcome back captain Joe Root for this test, however, as they look to return to winning ways.
England vs West Indies, 2nd Test
England must beat West Indies to keep their three-test series alive when they meet in the second test. The match, which is also part of the ICC World Test Championship, takes place at Old Trafford between July 16 and July 20
England fell short with the bat after electing to bat first in the opening test, with Jason Holder and Shannon Gabriel doing most of the damage with the ball. Captain Joe Root returns for this match, however, and Stuart Broad may also come back into the team after being overlooked last time out.
West Indies put in a good all-round display to earn victory last time out, with Jermaine Blackwood’s mature innings on the final day carrying them to a four-wicket win. It earned them 40 points in the World Test Championship and one more win will ensure they keep the Wisden Trophy.

England chose to bat first last time out, but overcast conditions – with James Anderson on his home ground – will surely lead them to bowl first if Joe Root wins the toss.
An overcast start to proceedings before things brighten up across the test, it is only the Saturday that could see a bit of rain-related disruption.
The Old Trafford Cricket Ground wicket has favoured batsmen in recent years.
England Team News & Playing 11
Joe Root will return to the team as captain after taking parental leave, which should mean Joe Denly misses out. Stuart Broad’s omission last time out did not pay off either, and the hugely experienced bowler is likely to return this time – Mark Wood could be the man to make way.
